We’ve been spotting dreamcatchers popping up in bohemian and festival weddings recently so we figured it was high time we looked a little further into the trend.

As feathers, tapestry rings, lace, macrame and geometry make their way into stylish modern wedding decor, and bohemian style is pretty much everywhere right now, from catwalks to interiors – it was only a matter of time before dreamcatchers made a resurgence (I remember it being a pretty big deal to have one hanging in your room when I was a teenager!)

Originating as a Native American handcraft, dreamcatchers are said to snare bad dreams and only allow filter the good thoughts into your sleep – which makes them a pretty lovely feature for a day that’s filled with happiness, hopes and good vibes.

But of course, with the ongoing talk of cultural appropriation, ‘trend’ is a word that needs to be used with a lot of caution when you’re talking about something that has a real cultural significance.

While walking down the aisle in a full Native American head dress is certainly not appropriate (no matter how trendy it might be), the key is to either nod to the aesthetic (lace filled tapestry rings with beading or tassels) or feature it in a respectful way, (ie; don’t use fake imitations, make your own or buy the real thing from a hobbycraft maker). Here’s a clear explainer to help you on your way.

So, with that in mind, we’ve put together a few ideas for incorporating dreamcatchers into your wedding day, whether it’s a simply an ode to rings and feathers, or something a little more authentic…
