Cosy Hygge Wedding Inspiration (& a Christmas Message)

2016. What a year it’s been.

For many of us, the last 12 months have been a struggle, from politics close to home, to crises around the world, the loss of great people, and events that have brought us to tears.

We hope we’ve been an escape from all that.

Because for lots of us, the year 2016 won’t go down in our personal history books as a bad one. It’s the year we got married or engaged, the year we attended our best friend’s wedding or took that amazing trip. For us, it was the year we launched our shiny new site and took part in an important viral campaign.

And we’re all about relishing the good things in life (and not feeling guilty about it).

So this year, our Christmas wish for all our wonderful readers and talented contributors is to take joy in celebrating, whether it’s big things like weddings or little things, like baking that cake you pinned on Pinterest two years ago.

And with that in mind, our final shoot of the year is a pretty special one. A winter wedding inspiration shoot that doubles up as a life lesson, about appreciating the small things, indulging in home comforts, and spending time with the people who matter most.

Photographed by Sam Gibson Weddings and designed and styled by Kirsten Butler, aka The Little Wedding Helper (and featuring a hot chocolate bar!) this one (and the video by McGill Sister Films to go with it) has given us a serious case of the warm, fuzzy, Christmassy vibes. And we reckon it’ll do the same for you.

Merry Christmas!

From the Stylist

Kirsten Butler, aka The Little Wedding Helper shares the story behind the shoot…

“Hygge. The Danish word that has become a bit of a buzz word this winter.

I keep pronouncing it as ‘huggy’ because this is how this word makes you feel. It translates into cosiness in English and is a way of life for the Danes. Meik Wiking, author of ‘The Little Book of Hygge’ defines it as ‘togetherness, relaxations, indulgence, presence and comfort’.

It got me thinking about weddings and how this Danish concept can really lend itself to the planning and design of a wedding day.

Many couples who I talk to about the styling of their big day often become overwhelmed with everything, all consumed with Pinterest and wanting to create the right look for their day. They can become lost in so many details that they lose sight of what the day is actually about.

Don’t get me wrong – I love the details! It’s what my job is about but it’s having detail that is meaningful and personal.

That when your guests walk into your ceremony and reception, they see the both of you entwined throughout. It’s not just about how it looks but how it feels too.

I believe that it’s not about how much you have to spend on your wedding but how you bring it all together.

After reading more and more about Hygge I really wanted to style a shoot that encompassed all its elements and more importantly, that were easy to recreate by any couple.

Thank you to all the suppliers who really got what I wanted to create. And to The Battleaxes for allowing us to take over a corner of their beautiful venue that really is perfect for any winter wedding with its log fires, wooden tables, mismatched chairs and as much hot chocolate as a wedding stylist could drink!”
