When you think of winter wedding decor, your mind (or at least my mind!) instantly goes to evergreen foliage and red ribbon, cinnamon sticks and tangerines, and lots and lots of pillar candles and fairy lights – this Hygge shoot pretty much sums it up!

But today’s gorgeous inspiration shoot shows us a whole new way to style a winter wedding, that’s cool, contemporary, luxurious, and personalised.

Taking their cue from their surroundings, Aspen wedding planners Bluebird Productions fused both the Western soul of their mountain town and the glamour of the clientele who visit it. Styled with ‘Aspen Chic’ in mind, they paired geometric detailing and a turquoise and gold colour palette with luxe protea arrangements and classic Southwest touches.

With photography by Rachel Havel, the results, as you’ll see, are pretty gorgeous. And whether you’re getting married in snowy Aspen or not, I think you’ll find a lot of ideas to borrow from this modern take on winter wedding style.

From the Team Behind the Shoot

Western contemporary were the words that Janie and Morgan (both born in the high altitudes of Aspen and Steamboat respectively) couldn’t resist holding on to when describing the inspiration of the mountain lives that they lead.

The juxtaposition of these ideas was the crux of the design, juxtaposition of the ghost chairs and cowhides, gold geometrics against a vintage barn, bright agate beside a steer skull, the clean white of the snow with hints of turquoise.

Surrounded by working ranches, Stetsons, furs, turquoise, and precious metals (like the silver and gold once mined in Aspen and exported across the world), our old world inspiration for this concept came naturally.

But Aspen occupies a certain niche that nowhere else in the world quite can, it’s a Western town that’s constantly evolving into the future thanks to the visitors that come from metropolitan destinations all over the world.

All the while maintaining the charm of a quiet mountain getaway, this town is host to black tie affairs, a world-class symphony, visiting presidents and dignitaries, and jets lining the runway.

Although Aspen’s dichotomy is something we live every day, we wanted to find some way to show it off to the world. We were so excited to work with Carolyn’s Flowers who brought our far-fetched ideas to life.

We had never even heard the word protea, let alone know if this exotic, tropical flower would survive the dry winter snow, but we knew we needed it.

And the watercolor paper suite created to match the real turquoise and gold accents made us realize where The Paper Perfectionist got her name.

We were gifted to work with an entire team of vendors who have become great friends with great vision. Each time we work with Rachel Havel we revel in the laughs we share and the striking photos she captures.

We’ve been just waiting to tell the story of our lives in the special mountain town that is Aspen.

As local wedding planners, the words “Aspen chic” just brush past your ear unnoticed because they’re enmeshed in daily jargon and a staple of our social culture.

What’s second nature to us (lucky enough to call Aspen home in one way or another: second, primary, or native), had yet to be defined for the rest of the world.
