Meet Emily and Chris, a gorgeous couple, who brought their Colorado love story full circle after getting married in Boulder last summer.

Their al fresco nuptials were a chic yet casual affair dipped in rustic features. From beautiful flowers and a stunning dress to burlap bunting and string lights hanging overhead, this elegant, yet relaxed gathering was carefully planned by the pair.

Delightfully captured by Sarah Joelle Photography, she tells us that the day was an atmospheric one, loaded with sweet features, “The ceremony took place outdoors under a beautiful, large tree. The guests were offered sunglasses before the ceremony with a little sign saying, “Our love shines bright, grab some shades!”

The cocktail hour including lawn games such as corn hole and croquet was cut short due to a rain storm but when the rain subsided the celebration continued outside under strings of bistro lights.

Rustic, chic details adorned the tables – burlap, mason jars, lanterns, tree truck slices, and bright blooms.

We think you’ll agree, this beaming couple make quite the blushing newlyweds – just read Emily’s cute description of their first dance – and that this outdoor bash is laced with thoughtful features and creative ideas.

The Love Story

Chris and I met through mutual friends at our college campus church ministry. We knew of each other for a few years, but didn’t start dating until the last few weeks of our senior year.

The first three months of our relationship consisted of Skype and phone calls, as I left for a trip to Africa shortly after graduation and Chris worked for a missions organization in Jamaica.

It was very different than most starts to a relationship, but we got to know each other so well through our conversations. By the time Chris returned to the United States, it felt like we had been best friends for a long time.

The Proposal

Chris is terrible at lying and keeping secrets (which I think is a good thing!), so the week leading up to our engagement was pretty entertaining. Looking back on his weird behaviour, I should have known something was up, but he did manage to surprise me!

The day we got engaged, Chris picked me up to go “have lunch with his brother” in Boulder. After a surprise stop at a diamond shop (to try to throw me off), Chris told me we were early for lunch and drove up to Flagstaff Mountain.

It was five degrees that day, but he insisted on taking a walk down a trail. About two minutes into our walk, he stopped, got down on one knee, and proposed.

Flagstaff was where we officially started to date, so it was a special place to get engaged.

Our Advice for Other Couples

I would tell anyone planning a wedding to enjoy the time of engagement and wedding planning!

Chris and I had so much fun making each of our decisions together, from choosing a venue to choosing ties for the groomsmen.

It’s easy to get caught up in all the little details and stress out, but keep the big picture in mind. Things may go differently than you planned, but on your wedding day, it won’t matter!

Our Favourite Moment

Our wedding day was incredible, and went by way too fast. It’s hard to choose just one favorite moment from the day, but I think it would be our first dance.

Our first dance allowed us to slow down for a moment and soak in the meaning and excitement of the day, all while surrounded by our closest family and friends.

Dancing with my husband and looking around at all the people we love will be a moment I will remember and cherish for the rest of my life.

Isn’t that first dance picture just glorious? And I love Chris’ face when he claps eyes on Emily for the first time.

Thanks so much to Emily and Chris for sharing their beautiful wedding with us.
