Cotswolds Countryside Wedding With A Personal Touch

Having never been to the Cotswolds, I have to live vicariously through the idyllic photos of sweet countryside weddings – I always find such admirable charm from the rustic estates and wide open fields. Today’s real wedding is a testament to that, featuring a couple adding their own personal touches to make this an endlessly charming English event.

Forgoing the “wedding mania” as they say, Amelia and David nixed many of the traditional wedding worries and focused on adding personalized details to their very unique wedding day. “We just wanted to put on a lovely celebratory party, with the help of friends and family, that felt like it reflected us as a couple” said bride Amelia, and they certainly did just that!

The ceremony, conducted by Amelia’s godfather, featured one of our favorite moments to date: a choir made up of wedding guests conducted by Amelia’s musician brother. And these weren’t just hymnals and traditional tunes, the congregation sang classics by both The Beatles and The Monkees.

Their commitment to personal touches continued throughout the day.  An open grill so guests could actually interact and feel the love with their talented chef, non-traditional photos that were “totally them”, self-written vows, a gifted roasted pig, all together on a family friend’s estate – a true labor of love.

Our Love Story

Our brothers were friends at university and set us up on a date five years ago.

Amelia proposed to David on top of Mount Etna in Sicily. Having said yes, he asked her, “Where’s my rock?” and she happened to be clutching a lump of lava in her hand so gave it to him!

The Wedding Vibes

We didn’t want to get caught up in wedding mania, fussing about colour schemes, napkins and very specific roles and titles for everyone. We just wanted to put on a lovely celebratory party, with the help of friends and family, that felt like it reflected us as a couple. Weddings can feel formulaic, so we wanted to get away from this and just do what we wanted.

We wanted the entire day to be outside, and the weather was thankfully kind to us! It was too much of a risk to eat outside, so we had an artist from the local village dress the inside of the tent as if it were outside, with lots of pots of plants and huge branches of trees tied around poles.

The Ceremony

We found a beautiful copse of trees where we had the ceremony, conducted by Amelia’s Godfather. We wrote the ceremony and vows ourselves.

Amelia’s brother writes and teaches music. He conducted a choir that our family and friends were invited to volunteer for. The choir sang Tender, by Blur. The congregation sang I Want to Hold Your Hand, by The Beatles and I’m A Believer, by The Monkees. Everyone stood and sat right around us during the ceremony, which felt really personal.

The Photography

Laura’s style of photography very much captures the moment and feeling of the day. They tell a bit of a story and are full of energy and colour. This is exactly what we wanted, as opposed to more traditional posed pictures. We were really pleased with the results, and people barely noticed they were there! We chose the videographer for the same reason – we hadn’t wanted it to be cheesy. Darren was brilliant.

The Food & Drink

Food and drink was one of the most important elements of the day. We had Bob Parkinson from Made By Bob doing our food, which was one of the best decisions we made about our day. We designed the menu and drinks from scratch with him. We wanted people to be able to see the food being cooked, rather than hide it away in a catering tent, so had a giant barbecue and a wood-fired oven in the middle of the reception area. David’s dad has a small farm and donated one of his pigs to us, which we ate in a couple of dishes.
