6 Ideas For Planning The Perfect Destination Wedding Weekend (& Honeymoon!)

6 Ideas For Planning The Perfect Destination Wedding Weekend and Honeymoon Dreams Resorts 8

As I write this, Jack and I are literally four days away from taking off on our destination wedding (unbelievable!) In the last year, I’ve spent copious amounts of time creating the perfect wedding weekend experience for our guests and am ready to dish all my best ideas and planning triumphs, so you don’t have to struggle a bit!

The most important aspect to us, of course, is getting married – and luckily that part is easy. But as our guests are taking off work, flying from around the world and spending their hard-earned cash to celebrate with us, we want to spoil them with a wicked week of celebration & fun. With help from planners’ advice, my own wedding expertise and polling our crowd, I’ve come up with a number of ways to create a fabulous wedding week & honeymoon.

Planning a destination wedding yourself from afar is not easy – it’s daunting, time-consuming, there’s a lot of coordination and plenty is left up to chance. I don’t have regrets, our party is certainly going to be “us”, but taking all the planning myself from another country was more than I expected. Were there a wedding option as fabulous as Dreams Resorts’ Beyond Memorable package in our beloved wedding destination I would absolutely jump at the offer.

Sure you can plan your destination wedding yourself like me (but please, brace yourself!) or you can browse through Dreams Resorts many beautiful beach resorts and tropical destinations across Central America & the Caribbean and let the pros do the work for you.

Including multiple events, coordination, vendors & a “we’ll take care of it all” attitude, Dreams Resorts Beyond Memorable package allows you to kiss the destination wedding stress goodbye. With welcome parties, rehearsal dinners, the wedding itself and some romantic honeymoon (and anniversary!) relaxation, Dreams Resorts’ offerings fit right in with many of the plans and ideas we’ve come up with for the week.

1. Arrive Early

It can take a few days (at least for me) to turn off your work brain and get into vacation mode. It can also be a bit stressful (especially for me) imagining your wedding vision from afar as your wedding date approaches. We’ve elected to land in Mexico five days before the wedding. This way we can recover from travel, get on West Coast time, and have a couple days to settle in calmly before our guests arrive.

2. Hire a Wedding Planner

If I won the lottery and I could only spend it on our wedding (what a wonderful scenario!) My first move would be hiring a full-service wedding planner. We are so lucky to have a friend jumping on board as day-of-coordinator for a stellar deal but I can’t tell you how much I wish I had hired her a year ago for everything: from corresponding and booking vendors to planning all the rentals, supplies and styling.

Choosing a venue that is all-encompassing with catering, coordination, rentals, dj and more sounds like a dream at this point (no pun intended). Dreams Resorts’ Beyond Memorable weddings not only include all the coordination & vendors but they’re entirely customizable so you don’t have to sacrifice your style for ease.

3. Plan a Wild Welcome Dinner

We know our “wild crew” are going to be ready to party the moment they land in Mexico. In order to save our guests from a brutal wedding-day hangover, we’ve planned a festive & firey Welcome Dinner two nights before the wedding. Guests are normally giddy and ready to celebrate when they arrive at a destination wedding, and planning a welcome event this is a great way to greet everyone.

4. Let Your Wedding-Eve Be a “Chill Day”

Following our wild evening of tacos and tequila, Jack and I are hosting a very chill, all-day pool party – with coconuts ready to crack & carne asada on the grill.

Whether you opt for an easy-going pool party like us, relaxing spa-day or a formal rehearsal dinner, let the day before your wedding be a chill one. Relaxing activities will curb those pre-wedding jitters and save yourself (and your guests) a hangover on your wedding-day.

5. Reserve Some Private Time With Your Future Spouse

When surrounded by family and friends whom you likely haven’t seen in ages, it can be easy to forget to save some private time with your love. Consider planning a wedding-day sunrise walk down the beach together, schedule a couples massage and facial or make reservations for a sexy, private meal – it is after all, about the two of you.

6. Stay Longer!

No one likes to hop on a plane home the moment the party is over. Why not extend your destination wedding into a honeymoon (or minimoon?) Play that bride card as long as you can with spa days, excursions & fabulous meals with your friends and family. Jack and I are sticking around for a week following the wedding and taking the guests still in town to swim with whale sharks – we’re almost as excited about the boat trip as the wedding itself!
