What To Do When You Want To Elope & Your Partner Wants A Wedding

Coral & Matthew

As we dive into the very ‘TBD’ 2021 wedding season, we’ve been sharing some Bridal Musings favorite elopements & real weddings, reminding our brides & grooms of the incredible advice of past couples that are even more relevant now while planning weddings during Covid.

This stunning Oregon elopement shoot is an excellent example of bridging both the elopement and the larger wedding, for any couples saying “I do” now and partying later…

What do you do when you’ve always dreamed of eloping & your SO has a traditional wedding in mind? Well, real bride & groom Coral & Matthew have the answer: you do both.

It should be no surprise to any newly engaged couple that the compromises of marriage start with wedding planning – from food & beverage choices, to a number of bridal party members, to first dance songs and the big ‘to first look, or not to first look’ question. But what if you’re torn at the very basis of your wedding day? What if you don’t want a wedding at all, but your partner does?

Coral & Matthew made it easy on themselves – why not have both? Planning a traditional wedding in San Francisco at a later date, the couple ran away to the Oregon Coast for a ‘faux elopement’. Likely taking inspiration from so many stunning styled shoots (like on BM!), the couple hired a little team of vendors to style a dreamy, misty, atmospheric elopement shoot and boy is it stunning!

Lindsay Lazare Photography shares this beautiful act of compromise, that we hope gives inspiration to couples everywhere unsure how to bridge the gap between big wedding & runaway ‘I do’s’.

Our Love Story

We met online before Tinder was a thing. Neither of us were looking for something serious and we spent a few weeks talking before agreeing to meet. We set a time and place and Matt never showed up. He took a nap and slept through his alarm and I pretended not to care. After lots of persuasion and persistence on Matt’s part I agreed to a do-over and the instant we met it felt like we’d know each other forever.

Matt proposed after six years by surprising me when I came home from work. I opened my front door to him on one knee in a heart made out of rose petals and a sign above him with the important question. We then drank champagne, played board games, and celebrated all night.

The Elopement & Wedding Plans

Our advice to other couples is to compromise. I’ve always dreamed of eloping just the two of us and he’s always dreamed of having a wedding. This allowed us to do both.

Our traditional wedding will be in San Francisco (where we both are from) but Oregon has such a special place in our hearts. It’s where we moved in together, where Matt proposed and where we’re planning our future. Matt didn’t want me to give up my dream and so we agreed, together, to do both.

The Dress & Attire

I wanted to go with something romantic and effortless for this. My dress for our traditional upcoming wedding is not white, I opted for a slate grey almost blue dress, so finding something whimsical and white was important to me. I loved the open back and lace detailing of my Divine Atelier gown.

Favorite Moments

My favorite part of the day was actually the weather and how secluded everything was because of it. It was such an adventure getting rained on and laughing through it while having the beach to ourselves. I also really enjoyed getting to know Lindsay (our photographer) and that made us so much more comfortable in front of the camera.
