You guys know by now that we’re pretty passionate about wedding dresses. Skin-tight satin, floaty chiffon, or falling lace, we love them all!
But what makes Celia Grace wedding dresses so special isn’t just that they’re gorgeous (which they are!) it’s that they’re eco-friendly, fair trade, and have a story behind them that’s just as beautiful as the dresses themselves.
The Celia Grace Story
Celia Grace was founded by Marcie Muehlke, who, as a bride, wanted a wedding that celebrated her and her now-husband’s values of sustainability and human rights.
When she couldn’t find a dress that both matched her style and her ideals, Celia Grace was born.
A collection of wedding dresses which are meaningful, not just for the brides who wear them, but for the seamstresses who create them as well.
Working with small sewing groups in the developing world, Celia Grace ensures that their skilled local tailors and seamstresses are fairly and safely employed.
In countries, like Cambodia, where many people live on less than $2.50 a day, and factory conditions are appalling, working for a Fair Trade enterprise allows Celia Grace seamstresses and their families, to break the cycle of poverty, while harnessing traditional craftsmanship, developing new skills, and doing meaningful work.
All this helps them to better themselves, their families, and their communities.
And not only do Celia Grace create dresses that are sustainable for their seamstress, but for the environment too.
Their beautiful silks and natural fibers are hand made and locally woven, lessening the carbon footprint by using no electricity and reducing transport.
(That’s a lot of good for one wedding dress, right?)
Now I know what you’re thinking. Eco-friendly dresses aren’t very chic. Think again!
With Celia Grace dresses, there’s no beige, no hemp, no sack-like silhouettes. These dresses are just as elegant, beautiful and stylish as any of the other collections we feature on the site.
Designed by Head Designer Alix Kivlin, each Celia Grace wedding dress is exquisitely handcrafted using vintage-inspired lace, exclusive hand woven silks, and stunning beading and detailed embellishments.
Their 2015 collection is filled with pretty sweetheart strapless dresses, illusion details, dreamy blush gowns, vintage-style capped sleeves, and gorgeous embroidered skirts.
They even come with innovative and versatile features like detachable trains and add-on belts.
Now we know every bride feels special on her wedding day, but imagine the extra glow you would feel knowing that your dress was helping a woman on the other side of the world to create a better life for herself and her family.
It’s so nice to have a story behind your dress, and the story behind these gowns is so heartwarming. As Celia Grace say, they create dresses “for brides who are beautiful inside and out”.
If you’re planning an entirely ethical wedding, if you’d like your dress to have added meaning, or if you’ve simply fallen in love with one of these beautiful gowns, your wedding dress is one of the most exciting purchases you’ll ever make, and while you’ll only wear it for one day, Celia Grace’s values ensure the impact is felt in developing communities for years to come.
