One of the most fun aspects of our job, is getting to share all the cool, new, and creative ideas, that couples and vendors come up with for weddings.

Whether it's a fun new decor trend, a sweet ceremony idea, or some gorgeous styling we never would have thought of ourselves, because weddings are so steeped in traditional details it's always refreshing to see something new or novel.

And this year, our real weddings and shoots were brimming with unique ideas. So we figured, while we were rounding up some of our favourite posts of the year, we'd share 10 unique ideas we hope to see more of in 2017.

Enjoy!

1. The Crowd-Sourced Ceremony

Reagan & Ryan's fiesta wedding was all kinds of cool, but our favourite detail had to be their ceremony. Their friend and celebrant asked guests to share stories about the moment they knew they loved the bride or groom.

It was a surprise for the couple and it looked so lovely!

2. Perspex & Gold

Perspex became really popular for wedding signage this year, but we loved recent real bride (and calligrapher), Kari's twist on the trend.

The gold backing on her signs, not only made her white font more readable, but it added a touch of luxury too.

3. The Doughnut Wall

Doughnuts were definitely the big wedding treat trend of 2016, and we have to say, we were pretty chuffed about it. We saw these sweet things served all manner of ways, the ‘donut wall' has to be our favourite.

Now if only we could get one of these in the office!

4. Statement Signage

Fun wedding signage has been around for quite a while but this year it got bigger and better.

We fell hard for this Gin & Tonic sign from Laura & Dickie's backyard bash. You just know your guests seeing this as they enter your wedding will instantly put them in the mood for a party.

5. Creative with Cactus Paddles

We brought you guys lots of decor trends this year, but one of our favourites was cactus paddles.

These juicy prickly pears were used for escort cards, table numbers, in bouquets or as backdrops. We reckon we'll be seeing more of these next year.

6. All of the Lights

Festoon lights and individual Edison bulbs were big trends in weddings this year, but we never saw them hanging in abundance quite like this set-up from Jade & Mitch's Bali wedding.

One of our most-liked images on Instagram and Pinterest, it's pretty clear you guys love this idea too.

7. Edible Escort Cards

We're always big fans of edible decor, but we thought this chic figgy escort card from a shoot earlier this year was too special not to share again.

Such a nice touch for a foodie wedding or a rustic bash, don't you think?

8. Circular Seating

When we saw Sunny & Wally's circular ceremony set-up from their Malibu wedding earlier this year, we just thought it was the coolest idea.

Not only did it make the most of the stunning vistas from their ceremony site, but it's a great way to make your guests feel more involved in your vows. Plus you'll really feel the love when you're standing in the middle of them!

9. A Different Kind of Bubble Bar

Planning by Knot & Pop, Photo by Sarah Gawler via Bridal Musings

Now we're well acquainted with bubble bars of the alcoholic variety, but this one from Marga & Bikash's London wedding this year was a little bit different.

Instead of Prosecco, they served up blowing bubbles for the kids – who knew touches for the little ones could be so chic!

10. Healthy Eating Alternatives

Planning by Saving Grace Occasions, Photo by Alex Nardulli via Bridal Musings

While we're rather fond of wedding cake, and love the idea of big day buffets and BBQs, we have been seeing a move to healthier wedding fare over the last 12 months.

One of the most unique ideas we shared on the blog this year was a zoodle bar bridal shower – definitely a fun idea for veg-loving couples to consider!
