Eclectic Barn Wedding in Fall

We’re easing into the weekend nicely, with an autumnal wedding that’s stylish, eclectic, and fun.

Evan & Lindsey celebrated their nuptials with a laid back barn wedding in Virginia in their very favourite season – fall.

Taking their cue from the turning countryside colours all around them, the couple opted for rich jewel tones for their florals and decor, while keeping things chic and muted when it came to the mix and match bridal party style. The result was an effortlessly cool aesthetic across their day. (They even had those cool vintage rugs along the aisle, a look I’m obsessed with right now!).

From the informal food to the personalised ceremony (shots with the officiant – love it!), every detail of this day was designed around putting their guests at ease and having a good time.

And as you’ll see from these beautiful pictures by Corrin Jasinski, Evan & Lindsey pulled it off – and then some!

Our Love Story

We met at a music festival! We were in the same group, had mutual friends, but had never met before – which we found strange!

Like, “why didn’t you guys introduce us sooner”?!?

The first day of the festival, we were walking into the music grounds together and Evan said the absolute funniest thing I have ever heard (our little secret) and we fell immediately in love. Been inseparable ever since!

The Setting

Evan and I are easygoing, free spirited people so we knew immediately that we wanted our wedding to represent that… as much as a wedding can!

We were engaged in the fall, and on my favorite holiday – Halloween! We wanted to stay with that same season for our wedding since it’s our favorite and picked a date for the following year. The weather is more tolerable and conducive for an outdoor affair for everyone, plus having the backdrop of the fall foliage was a definite (FREE) bonus!

Murray Hill was the first venue that we looked at and we immediately fell in love. We decided it was the “one” and planned to move on but my now mother-in-law thought we should look at two others we also liked just to be sure.

Nothing else could compare to Murray Hill. The bluff overlooking the Potomac River where the ceremony was held was a favorite among guests, and the beautifully remodeled llama barn that held our reception perfectly captured the feeling of “quaint and low-key” that we strived for.

We wanted our guests to focus on themselves and the moment, and not so much their surroundings and decorations. We wanted them to let loose and just have fun.

Keeping things simple, colorful, and fun was the overall goal. It all goes by so fast even though it seems like forever for the day to finally come. It was truly the second-best day of my life to date …first being that hot June day when Evan said the funniest thing I had ever heard at a noisy, dirty music festival.

The Flowers

The colors for the flowers were based on jewel tones. Fall to me is more than just orange, red, and yellow!

Great contrasts to these are bright teals, deep purples, and navy blues so I really wanted to compliment the natural colors that surrounded us. We wanted to go with non-traditional, more wild-type flowers with the bouquets and table arrangements, but because those flowers were out of season, it made it very hard for florists to capture my vision.

Luckily, my wedding planner, Michele, put us in touch with April at Wildflower Weddings and she just nailed it! She has her own greenhouse where she grows flowers that can be used out of season.

Favourite Moments

The ceremony. Hands down. Evan crying like baby as I walked down the aisle; the celebrational shot of Jameson we did with our friend and officiant, Chris; and Evan fumbling his vows stating my “breast friend” instead of “best friend” in front of a hundred of our closest friends and family (which they still have not let him live down).

The ceremony was perfect and summed up exactly who we are both as individuals and as a couple.

The Photography

Evan and Corrin’s fiancé, MJ, played street hockey together in a local fun-league and when Evan mentioned that we recently had gotten engaged, MJ just happened to know a great a professional photographer focusing on engagements and weddings.

After looking at her work, I knew she was the one we needed to capture the beauty of our day!

I recommend her to everyone, and all our friends still rave about her photos from our Wedding. She has a great eye and is a stickler for detail.

She captures the exact moments you want to cherish and relive. She will be our go-to photographer for all our major life events!

The Wedding Dresses

I had two gowns on our big day – one for the ceremony and then one for the reception. Both are very different but are very “me” too.

My style is very boho but I definitely like to switch it up and mix styles, so I wanted both gowns to continue to convey that about me. The ceremony gown was rustic in nature thanks to the lace, but one look at the detailing on the back and it transforms into a more delicate, intricate gown.

The detailing in the back was the little surprise I loved most about that dress!

The second gown was very simple yet chic thanks to the elaborate beading on the organza cape. The cape was handmade by a designer in Spain that I found on Etsy. It definitely took that sheath gown to a whole new level. I hope to be able to incorporate that cape into my daily attire somehow!

The Bridal Party Style

We wanted the foliage and flowers to really stand out so the palette for the wedding was just greys, nudes, and neutrals with nature doing the rest.

My bridesmaids have such different styles that I didn’t want to pigeonhole them all into one dress or even one dress color. I told them the color palette, gave them a few sites, and when they found a few they liked they would ask me and that was that!

I loved how they were all different and in different colors, but somehow they all just worked.

For the groomsmen, we wanted them to wear a different color than Evan. I was tired of seeing wedding photos of other grooms with their groomsmen and not knowing exactly which one was the groom since they all looked the same.

I wanted Evan to also standout on our day, not just me. The suits were all purchased at Men’s Warehouse, but Evan’s was custom made. When I look at the picture of the bridal party all together I just can’t believe how great we all looked!

The Food

Oh! And the food! We did not want to go conventional here.

We love food, and Tex-Mex is probably our favorite! Main Event Caterers was very eager to work with us on a menu centered around our love of tacos and a few of our guests’ dietary restrictions.

I think they may have been more excited than we were to not have to serve up a steak, chicken breast, or fish filet.

The Decor & Details

Decorations were minimal and for the most part handmade. I would say that 90% of the geo-sculptures that were on the tables were made my me and my family; the rest were purchased at various stores in the area.

I made about 15 of them and my Aunt Lynn and cousin Jake constructed the rest. I owe them big time because as simple as the materials were (straws, wire, & spray paint), they were a PAIN to make!

Other than the geos, the remaining decorations were pretty simple too: votives of various sizes from BHLDN, handmade-by-me dreamcatchers, and strands of LED lights. Cozy, casual, and carefree was the ambience we were after.

Advice for Other Couples

Start planning as early as possible.

We were engaged on Halloween and decided to wait until January to find a venue so we could enjoy just being engaged. Worst mistake. Everything books quick and well in advance.

As soon as you’re engaged, decide on a date, and nail down your venue. After that, take a break and enjoy it before really diving into the planning.
