Getting up close and personal with some gorgeous wedding gowns is our idea of a good time. So, when we managed to snag a meeting with London designer, Sabina Motasem, during her Bridal Week previews, we were in heaven!
Sabina Motasem has been producing signature bridal designs from her studio in trendy Dalston for over a decade now. Her wedding dresses feature clean, modern lines with interesting textures and details. She describes them as “Simple and elegant but with something extra or unexpected, like a unique neckline or fabric”.
With the latest collection, Aurora, taking its cues from the Roman goddess of sunrise, names hold a lot of significance for this designer: Each of the gowns is named after a woman who’s inspired her, – whether that’s in her personal life, or stars of stage and screen from bygone eras – the ‘Margot’ dress, for instance, is a nod to legendary ballerina, Margot Fonteyn.
A love of dance is also reflected in Motasem’s design choices; using bias cuts and fabrics that move beautifully.
As she showed us highlights from the collection, it was obvious that this is a versatile range that brides can have fun with and make their own. One of the key trends is layering and separates, and the models were having a blast mixing up different pieces.
Bridal labels are increasingly offering separates as an option, but we really admire the way these designs all flow into each other effortlessly; creating a stunning and thoughtful mix and match styles. – As a Sabina Motasem bride, the hardest decision would be choosing what to wear!
When asked where she finds her inspiration, she told us that a lot of ideas come from the natural world. For instance, a gorgeous pearl-encrusted top to echo soft spring raindrops, another with painstakingly appliqued forget-me-not flowers, and using a color palette that recreates a vision of golden seas.
Talking of color; from classic ivory and creams, moving through to deep, rich rose golds, the shades used throughout the collection were intentionally chosen to complement a range of skin tones.
The emotional significance of the day guides her choices just as much as stylistic elements, however. These are dresses that celebrate the joy and playfulness of a wedding day; dresses that are meant to be worn and reveled in. They would feel equally at home, whether walking serenely down a church aisle in the morning or dancing barefoot at midnight with your beloved.
